Dr. Joachim Bretschneider is Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology in the department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Leuven (Belgium). He received his PhD in Near Eastern Archaeology from the University of Münster (Germany) in 1990. In Syria, he directed the German excavations at Tell Beydar between 1993-2000 and since 1999 he leads the Belgium Excavation at Tell Tweini. His main research interests focus on the development of early urbanism and complex societies in the Near East, inter-regional interaction, economic systems, and Ancient Near Eastern art. He has written over 90 journal articles, book chapters, and reviews. His recent book (Jans G. & Bretschneider J., Seals and Sealings of Tell Beydar/Nabada: Seasons 1995-2001. A Progress Report, Brepols 2011) analyses ancient seals and administration in Northern Mesopotamia.
